self-esteem and willingness to lead change

Last class we were talking about the “what it is there for me.” I think people may not be very enthusiastic about producing business results but definitively they can be enthusiastic in producing better quality of life for them. It is very satisfactory for everyone to work in a team where people trust each other. I am sure If people would have the chance, everyone would choose to belong to a team with passion, commitment, perseverance, etc. People want to work happy everyday. However, committed people are different than conformable people. Fostering personal changes in people enclose the challenge of producing people who really want to do things well. If upper management is not ready to deal with people that really want to do well, they could be removed from their positions. It is why the system  tends sometimes to protect it self from deep change. To release change, managers have to be prepared to loose control over the people they lead. Why somebody would like to lose the control? Only when people have a high self-esteem they can still be happy even though they lose power and therefore control. The conviction of doing the right things gives to the change agent energy to encourage the change even though he/she could be injured in some way. They know they will be recognized as pioneer of the bonanza later on.

This reflection reveals the importance of personal development to face change. It is harder to expect the best from the future when people think they already have more than they deserve. People who think they cannot achieve more will not jeopardize what they already have. These people do what they do not because they like, but because they need to demonstrate who they are. These people have very often what I call “the conversation of the impostor”. It is the self talking recognizing that the image that people have about one’s it is higher than should be. It is people who need to demonstrate their capacity all the time because they do not trust themselves.

World is moving faster and western culture push everyone to succeed. Therefore, everybody try to show they are succeeding. Sometimes people reach the pick faster than they can process it so they attribute the success to lucky. Other people have not reached the pick but they fake like they did. This kind of people hardly could be interested in losing the control of what they have. Hardly they could accept change and expect the best from the future. The risk to their self-esteems is too high. Conversely, people who embrace their lives and do not need external recognition to think they are good can easier lose the control because they do not depend on what people think about them. When this kind of people sponsor a change, they think is for the best, if the change fails, they will not feel devastated. Even better, they are more likely to encourage change because they trust the change can bring the best because they deserve it.
